How are the funds raised through the Winners Walk of Hope used by Ovarian Cancer Canada?
The Winners Walk of Hope was first launched as an opportunity for women living with ovarian cancer and their families to come together to offer support to each other. Although it has become a successful fundraising event, this spirit of support and building community strength are the underlying values of the event. The funds raised through the Winners Walk of Hope help support OCC's mission to:
All programs and activities implemented and supported by Ovarian Cancer Canada are evaluated and identified as priorities by the OCC staff, Board of Directors and support the OCC mission. OCC feels that it is important to support as many individuals at one time as possible and that our programs continue to be inclusive. The numerous research projects, support programs and awareness activities support a broad range of individuals and funds raised through the Winners Walk of Hope ensures that OCC will continue to be able to provide consistent and quality programs across Canada.
What are these programs?
OCC is proud of our many research initiatives that will hopefully one day help find not only an early detection test but one day a cure for ovarian cancer. The funds raised through the Winners Walk of Hope help OCC to support such research programs as the National Ovarian Cancer Tissue Banks, a valued resource for ovarian cancer researchers and has proven useful for a large number of research projects. OCC is a major sponsor of the Canadian Conference on ovarian cancer research, a valuable opportunity for scientific exchange among ovarian cancer researchers in Canada and is a biennial event. OCC helps to fund various research projects that have been ranked very highly, meaning that they have scientific merit, are novel and promising. Since early detection is one of the highest priorities as it has the most significant impact on the outcomes for ovarian cancer patients, OCC is funding pilot project research on early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer.
Through the Listen to the Whispers program, Survivors Teaching Students, Symposium and various other awareness programs and activities OCC continues to turn up the volume on ovarian cancer across the country. The Winners Walk of Hope funds training programs for dedicated volunteers, the growing support staff of the organization and allows OCC to conduct evaluations to ensure that the various initiatives remain effective. The You Are Not Alone kit continues to be distributed through the national and regional offices to women newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer and the Some Buddy program allows survivors to connect through peer support - all of these programs are support by funds raised nationally by the Winners Walk of Hope.:: back to top

Picking Up the Pieces: OCC-sponsored day-long workshops designed to help women living with ovarian cancer adjust to the 'new normal' and move forward after their diagnosis - in the physical, emotional, spiritual and social/relationship aspects of their lives. The OCC sponsored program is facilitated by Dr. Sherri Magee, co-author of Picking Up the Pieces, Moving Forward After Surviving Cancer.
The many research initiatives such as the National Ovarian Cancer Tissue Banks, the Canadian Conference on ovarian cancer research, and the various research projects that OCC funds benefit all local communities due to the fact that early detection is one of the highest priorities as it has the most significant impact on the outcomes for ovarian cancer patients.
